On The Road With You

Driving From Cottage To Substitute Cottage

Don't think I'm not thinking of you, my dear readers. I think of you all the time, taking pictures all day long for you, which makes everybody around me believe I'm completely crazy. But when the evening comes I'm just too exhausted to upload them, mark them, not to mention write a post.

Park entrance, a few yards away from Cottage

Former train station inn, now transformed into a house.
Why am I so tired? Because I'm on the road all day long.

Lovely rose filled roundabout very close to Cottage.

It starts early in the morning, before the workers arrive at Cottage. I drive from Substitute Cottage to Cottage to see Milo and sometimes Piano, the two cats who stayed at Cottage and who disappear as soon as the workers show up. If I can, I stay a little longer to meet the workers and check what's going to be done that day.

Then I drive to school 1 or school 2 depending on the day of the week. At lunch time, I usually love to laugh with my colleagues (I am lucky enough to have very funny colleagues that I'll miss a lot next year), but lately, I drive back to Cottage to check what's been done. Right, I'm a control freak, but last week, that's how I found out everything that had been done in the morning was wrong and was to be undone. Imagine how much time we would have wasted if I hadn't come back at lunch time! Then I drive to Substitute Cottage for a quick bite and a walk with Shadow, the cat who followed me there.

Narrow street from the village.

The village church is between Cottage and Substitute Cottage.

By the time I'm back to school, I'm a mess... It's really hot for Brittany standards these days and my car doesn't have air conditionning... I'm trying to keep the windows open... which makes my long hair go wild... I must be quite a vision when I arrive in the staff room!

In the evening, I drive to Cottage, check what's been done, feed the cats, stay with them a little, try to do what I can in the garden, which is currently as wild as my hair. When I sit back in my car, I'm so tired that I let the car drive by itself. Seriously, sometimes, when I park under the bedroom window of my rental, I can't remember how I managed to arrive there.

A little fisherman's Cottage I'd love to renovate.

I'd also love to renovate that one!

Anyway, on one of those midday trip, I decided to snap a few pictures for you, thinking you'd love to see how it looks in between Cottages. All pictures were taken from my car, as fast as I could while there was no car behind me, so you'll understand why some are crooked or why sometimes I didn't have time to adjust the light.

The mansion behind that gate is being renovated.

The last house before I make a turn to find my Substitute Cottage.
Now, some news about Cottage. The bathroom has been torn down to reveal some very bad eletrical wiring behind those walls. I'm so relieved this is going to be sorted out. Also, even you can't really see it there, the bathroom window has been changed, so now I shall be able to open it after taking a hot shower... that is when I'll be able to take a hot shower there!

See you soon for more news,

A bientôt,

PS&: I'm just back from Cottage and the electrician was hard at work!

Sweet Dreams

Watching TV With Magali (And Possibly Some Cats) - July 2015 Edition

You might have thought that I took a vacation to the Caribbean as I've been away from Blogland for a few days... Except for the fact that I'm on the seaside, it's as far as possible to it! I've been busy emptying half of my Cottage for the renovation and moving to a substitute cottage for a little while. Then the renovation began, I had to play Chief to six men all while working and it wore me down.

It might seem weird to write a TV show inspiration post when the substitute cottage doesn't have a TV, or rather it has one, but it doesn't work... But my house is such a mess right now, that I need a dose of prettiness!

So, please be nice with me and say you don't mind me taking you back to Emily's beach house...

I'm going to tell you how it's inspiring me for my own dining nook...

First, something I've already added to my own dining nook. The flowy curtains. It adds charms without blocking the light. I love them!

I love the built-in hutch behind Emily here... Not something happening at Cottage... But a hutch really says cosy dining area to me... Of course, you've never noticed mine in any previous pictures since I haven't told you its story yet!

A table is kind of compulsory in a dining area, don't you think? Emily has a lovely very clean-lined wood one that is surrounded by wood chairs at the beginning and then by slipcovered ones. Because, neddless to say, revenge leaves plenty of time to sew slipcovers, unlike renovation....

Lighting is also really important so you can change the atmosphere depending if you have company or spend a lonely birthday evening...

Since we're talking about lighting, let me tell you that Emily didn't like that gorgeous chandelier very much... I liked it and would be OK if the set designer decided to send it to me (you never know...). Also, since they'll be paying for the delivery, they could add the fun seagull painting to the package... If that's not too much to ask!

So at some point, she changed it for this one.

So, the elements I'd like to keep in my own dining nook are : the brightness of it, the flowy curtains, the hutch, the accents of wood, the accents of seaglass colours, the different ways to light the room.

Now, you've seen in the partial reveal that some of these elements are already there, some are still missing.

I'd love to tell you I'm hard at work at it, but currently, the dining nook looks like that:

It is used as the headquarters during the upstairs renovation... Taped on the old plastic tablecloth I found somewhere are the telephone numbers of all my workers and mine in case we need to talk to each others, the project on blue print (homemade) and the weekly planning for the workers! Not very magazine worthy, don't you think?

And here's my living-room loaded with all the stuff that used to be upstairs. Maybe you can spot a bed-frame or a even a matress! If you think this is rather ugly, have a look at how my bedroom looks lately!

I'm wondering how comfortable are those big bins to sleep on?

I'm pretty sure you know understand why I didn't have time to write or to read your blogs lately!

I'll try and write a post about my substitute cottage when I can.

See you as soon as possible,

A bientôt,

PS: Days at this time of year are very long in Brittany... And I haven't the sun going down for a while as I'm so tired in the evening that I fall asleep while the sun is still up!

Wandering Around The (Messy) Cottage - June 2015 Edition

Hi everybody! I've missed you... But last week was just too crazy to find time blogging - be it reading or writing.

Among the many, many things that filled my last week was a trip to a doctor. Nothing worrying, so no need to talk about the doctor, but I think you may be interested in the trip.

See, the doctor's office is in Dinan, a lovely medieval town located three quarters of an hour from Cottage. I've been marking papers, putting things away in boxes and painting all day long lately and a doctor appointment isn't really the "most funnest" way to have a break from it all. So I decided to leave a little early, to park on the harbour and to walk all the way up to the medieval town where the office is.

Would you like to join me?

Vous vous joignez à moi ?

Let's park on the harbour down the river and walk all the way to the city walls you can see in the above picture, because that's where the doctor's office is.

This street is probably the most famous in Dinan, so you'll excuse the unknown tourists photo-bombing in nearly each picture. I didn't have time to wait for them to walk away or I would have been late to my appointment!

The street is a cobbled one and is pretty steep, so I advise you to have good walking shoes... Of course, I didn't follow my own advise and I had darling little flats that I know you're dying to see...

The street is full of adorable houses with shops downstairs. One of the house was transformed to become a tanner house at the end of the 19th century and you can see the "plantation looking shutters" upstairs where the leather was dried.

I think this is the oldest house in the street.

You can see here how steep the street is.

Aie ! Les mollets !

In the middle of the street, we need to walk through that gorgeous tower that marks the former entrance of the city.

Climbing roses and old building are a perfect match.

Those special shutters means this house was a shop in the Medieval times: the merchandise was displayed on the open shutters... Imagine hot cakes there...

Phew! We made it to the top the street and here we are in the town. We'll visit it an other day if you want, because now I need to run to my appointement!

I didn't take any picture in the doctor's office, but I'll sum up the meeting for you "I need to wear my sun hats even more than I already do!" Maybe I should buy an other one, I'm not sure I have enough of them in my collection. Too bad, he didn't say anything about the shoes...

Now let's walk down the street, shall we?

I hope you enjoyed that walk and that your legs aren't hurting too bad. I need to go back packing now as the renovation project starts next Monday. I'll take lots of pictures and I'll post them when the Internet is back working...

See you soon,

A bientôt,

PS1: I may or may not have noticed when I undressed at the doctor's that my knees were all blue from spending so much time on them while packing.

PS2 : I may or may not have had to cut a full lock of my hair yesterday evening after noticing it was full of white paint and I hadn't noticed it before when I was painting in the afternoon... It was dry and there was really nothing else to do... Blue knees and uneven locks... No wonder Prince Charming can't find me!
