Think Lovely Dining-Rooms

A Dining-room Inspiration Post

Our Winter break in Brittany is about to end and all my best laid plans to do huge things in the dining-room went completely awry for three main reasons: my laziness, the cold weather and the hours the new file for an authorisation for my office window took me...

1.

2.
Still, this post is not all disappointing news.

3.

4.

First, last Monday, under a pouring rain, the carpenter and I went up a slippery ladder to measure everything again to make sure the new window would apply to the regulation I knew nothing about until last week.

5.

6.
Next Monday, I'm taking my "new" project (really nothing has changed, but don't tell them that) to the townhall and in a few months, I should get a "yes" or a "no".

7.

8.
I also talked to my neighbour about that tiny window I'd love to open in my toilet. She just laughed when I told her the townhall didn't want me to create it. Obviously it's just above her parking spot and to see if her car is parked or not, I'd have to stand up on my toilet bowl and really lean out, which will be impossible given the size of the window! She'll write a letter saying she agrees on the window, again I'll take it to the townhall and we'll see in a few months what they say!

9.

10.
Does this mean that nothing will happen here during a few months? No! Don't worry, I have begun working on the dining-room and even if it's not as advanced as I would like it to be, I should be able to show you something come March!

11.

12.
Meanwhile, I thought I could share some of my inspiration pictures with you. There's something I love in each inspiration picture, but I'm choosing not to tell you what it is.

13.

14.
Maybe instead you can tell me which pictures inspire you the most and what you love in it.

15.
In the next posts, I'll show you what's already been done in the dining-room so you'll know what's left to do.

See you soon,

A bientôt,

  2. We were told, when we wanted to put a TINY window overlooking my neighbour's garden, that we had to use those horrible glass tiles. So we decided not to bother.

  3. I can tell I have had it with winter, I just eat the colors in those rooms. I am so over whitewashed, snowy and cold interiors =) Soft aqua, lime, pink... Welcoming the soon to be spring-green! no 4 and 7 really hits the spot for me. You are brave to go against the windmills of townhall!

    1. Well, I think you found out that I'd like to add a little bit of colour to my dining-room some way or an other!

  4. they don't want you to be able to look out a window, and see if your neighbor's car is there, or not????????? these people are beyond reality!!!!!!! yishhhhhhhhh!!!!

  5. I agree with Tessa : are people going crazy by the thousands at the same time ?? Well, it seems to be the sad reality... Thanks for countering this sad news with a splash of spring colour ! Here also, I want spring to come (preferrably tomorrow!) and I want my home to match spring, colourwise! Sadly, it rains all day and if I open a window, a 7° Celsius wind blows a chilly breeze inside, brrr, how quickly We are back onto the sofa under a fleece blanket, saying "maybe tomorrow..." Keep warm and cosy, and keep on planning and sharing your thoughts, we love it !! Marcy

    1. The thing is that the rule is the same for everybody. I understand that no window should overlook directly your neighbour's property. But her houses are attached and used to be one property: the land was then separated in a weird way so my garden is nearly all around my neighbour's garden, but the patch of land in front of my house on the street side belongs to her... It happens a lot in old hamlets, but the administration can't seem to see this is an exception!
Same rainy weather here today, it's due to the very important we have today... I'm watching Enchanted under a blanket for the hundredth time! I'll renovate an other day, a sunny one if possible!

  6. Beautiful! I choose #9. Love the color and the light and breezy look. I would take #6 in a pinch. LOL They're all so pretty, but I'll stick with #9.

  7. Without going back to your prior posts on your inspiration (which I will, in a bit), I love all the fresh green color I see in the photos - the insets of the units (and I love free standing units), the chairs, etc. I just did a couple posts on my jadeite, and I think it would look good in any of these inspirational room photos, lol. I also love plate racks, and have been wanting one on a wall in my kitchen for the longest time. Best of luck with the town red tape.

  8. I like 13, 9, and 7........they are light and breezy. I, for one, have to have color and really like the aqua, soft green and pink. Also love a plate rack, the kind that sits flat against the wall with a bar across to hold the plates back. I have a small one ready to paint and to hang in a hall......no more room in the kitchen!!! Enjoy your movies!!!

  9. They're all gorgeous but I think I like no. 6 for a more formal space and no. 7 for a little more casual room. I love the table in no. 13 with its pretty scalloped edge. Can't wait to see what you do in your dining room, Magali!

  10. I love #7 with the brick floor. I imagine when I drop a plate on it, the explosion would be incredible! :)

  13. Nos, 1,7,13 & 15 touch of sea glass green. Perhaps paint a cabinet of yours? And pretty flower curtains too. And oh, a rug underneath the table? All sea colors! I too, like plate racks. Martha Stewart had a beautiful green/grey one on her tv show years ago. I will never tell on you, Magali! Keep warm, Kathleen in Az

    1. I'm going to try to incorporate some sea colours. I'm still hesitating about painting one of my old sideboard that is in pretty bad shape...

  14. I love them all, but No 1 for the gorgeous pops of colour, No. 3 because I love the large fireplace and fitted shelving and although it's all white it seems cosy, No. 8 because it seems oh so English and I love the colour on the walls mixed with the wood and whites, No. 9 I've pinned myself as I love the space overall and Nos 11 and 12 are also both gorgeous. I'm drawn to the white rooms although I can never stop adding colour to my house (which makes the name of my blog pretty ridiculous !). Oh yes, I love the chairs in No 13 and that beautiful chandelier in No 12.
You see Magali, you've put up loads of lovely eye candy, goodness knows what you're doing - I can't wait !

  15. Dear Magali,
it takes them month to decide on one window? Awful! I wish you all the luck in the world! As for the dining room: 6,8 and 11 are the ones I like best, but I don´t know why. There is alot of fresh green on your pictures - perhaps you are longing for spring? I wish you a happy weekend and a good start on Monday. I am looking forward to spend more time in my office, this is soooo relaxing (compared to all the work in the house right now)!
    Yours, Sarah

  17. # 6 is my favorite. I love the lantern pendant, the wood table with painted chairs, the floor, those french doors and all the light. Can't wait to see what you do with your dining room. I think it's great that your neighbor is soundly on your side regarding the window. Yea for her! And you!

    Bref je me suis régalée.
    Bises. Babette

  23. Oh Magali, each photo truly is lovingly picked! I am going to have to go visit each site where you got these pictures; they are inspiring for ME! I almost have this look in my dining room and home, so all the white and lovely grays and neutrals are just what I love. I wish you much success on this nouvel projet! Anita

  25. Hi dear friend, I do love the pictures that you shared and mainly because of the blues and greens in them that remind me of our lake and the sky, I guess that is why I choose to have some of these colors in my home. Hang in there you will get what you need for your house, it's to bad it just takes so long. Nothing like windows! Jo

  26. Magali, as usual, I trust that whatever you decide to do will be gorgeous! But I do have a request. PLEASE use the chairs from number 9 and the curtains from number 10! For some reason, those two things are so beautiful to me. I see so many other pretty things in all of the pictures. Like you, there is something in each picture that I love, but if I had a house of my own, I would do my utmost to incorporate those chairs and curtains! Good luck with your window battle.

  27. It is good you are taking a little time for yourself to be lazy and just enjoy cottage! I do hope you are approved for your little window. After reading all the books by Peter Mayle I get what you are going through. I love a lot in all your photos but the last one I love for the table and chars and how the light floods through the window.

  28. Hi...my faves are #'s 1 & 3 for those built-in cabinets..4..7 &9 for the soft color..6..7 & 10 for the doors to..the outdoors..after reading the comment of how your land is divided..maybe the neighbor should put in for the window..makes me wonder what the person had been drinking before laying out who owns what..an where..you are right it is very weird indeed..hope you get Great news in the months to come..that must feel like forever waiting for that..YES you may proceed..like a kid waiting for Christmas morning..I look forward to the next installment of what's going on with cottage..hope you have a nice weekend..usually cold here on Maryland's Eastern Shore..as well as snow..which I admit..I do like snow once in a while over all the rain we've had since last fall..I feel sorry for everyone in New England here in the States..I seen a photo of a girl who had opened her front door an the imprint of the door was in the snow..the entire opening was covered over..yicks...tell cottage he is really looking good.!

    1. I often wonder how much whiskey they had before dividing the land between our two twin cottages, but I guess it made sense at some point... Like maybe one of them needed that much space for a farming device or something.

    2. I guess you're right that could be it..my mom would also guess..it must have been men that came up with that idea..over here we have something called..Grandfathered in..so there is a bit of leeway..I'm not exactly sure how it works tho..hope you get that window in the end of it all...

  31. Well, of course I love all the pictures, specifically I love the colors! The sea glass and the minty green are my favorites as well, for me accented in deep rich red and snow white (you know I love snow white, right?). However, of all the pictures, I think the chairs in picture 9 are what stands out most. I love the color, and I love outside furniture used inside for an airy, summery feel. I'm also partial to the large cabinet/sidboard in picture 15 that is mostly hidden behind the wonderful chandelier, and the huge jug of flowers. And then there's the florals in picture 14, as well as the sweet painted chairs in different colors. Love that too. In fact, love it all, can't wait to see what you are up to! Stunned that it takes months to review a plan for a window in a cottage, but trying not to think about it. Best alway from Sarah Turkey Plate!

  32. All of them are quite inspiring. Loving any room with the light "teal" in it. Each picture has it's own unique touch, but the third one caught my eye because I'm looking to have some built-ins done beside my fireplace. I'm always looking for storage! You know living in a small cottage!

  33. I do hope you get the relevant permissions - red tape is such a pain isn't it?! I love the brightness of all the photos, but what stands out to me are the chandeliers. I'm looking forward to seeing what you decide for the dining room!

  34. oh bureaucracy.. they will need to meet to plan the meeting where they will then make a decision.... governments are the same at every level. ;)
I LOVE all of the photos for the same reasons as everyone else...colour, light, spring.... made me feel very Easter-ish!! :)

  35. I love all of your inspiration photos, but #6 and #10 win my vote with those fabulous french doors and all that wonderful light! I hope you get approval for your window changes, Magali. I'm guessing it's the blue and green colors in the photos that are the common denominator.....or is it planking on the walls and ceilings? I guess we'll find out when you reveal your dining room!

  36. I like something in each one of the inspiration photo's. But, I am sure it will look great when you finish the room. Good luck with the old fuddy duddy's at the Town Hall.

  37. I am sorry for your window delay and hoping it will all turn out in your favor! All of your inspiration photos are just wonderful - it is hard to choose a particular one, but I am partial to #'s 1, 9, 10 and 14. I can't tell you why...they just appeal to me. I'm sure that whatever improvements you make will be lovely. xo Karen

    1. I'm sure I'll find a way somehow to make it work with or without the window! Did you notice that all the pictures you liked have a touch of green ?

  38. Is it the color blue-green or the table and chairs? I love the pale blues, greens and blue-greens. I wanted to say that I can't believe the trouble you have to go through to put a small window in your bathroom, but I know better. It's the government. They want a say in what you do, and probably the money that comes with asking! If I were you, I would have put in the window and waited for them to notice! Maybe.
